The ACS did not disagree with the CPT Editorial Panel request to delete this code because the work related to treating patients with Hodgkin’s disease or lymphoma will be variable. Code 49220, Staging laparotomy for Hodgkin’s disease or lymphoma (includes splenectomy, needle or open biopsies of both liver lobes, possibly also removal of abdominal nodes, abdominal node and/or bone marrow biopsies, ovarian repositioning), was identified through this screen. The AMA CPT Editorial Panel annually screens the code set for codes that are rarely reported. Because of the extensive changes in reporting office and other outpatient E/M services, the AMA CPT Editorial Panel removed all examples related to codes 99201–99215. Each example was developed by surgical and medical specialties as indicated. Each of the sections is further divided and many of the subdivisions contain instructional notes that pertain to that subdivision. All of the sections in the CPT book begin with the guidelines that pertain to the entire section. The CPT Codebook contains much of the instructional guidance for using the codebook.
